Culture Week Art

St. Mel’s is celebrating Culture Week!! We kicked off culture week with a day centered around art! The UPK little ones and the K-8 students explored artists and art work from all different countries. Take a scroll through our video to see what some of the different classes did! Keep learning about cultures all around the world boys and girls!!

1st Graders Learning about St. Mel

St. Mel’s is celebrating the saint that our school represents!! Mrs. Garry’s 1st graders spent some time this week creating their own Mitre hats. The students used a variety of materials, in order to make their Mitre hats for St. Mel extra special.

Celebrating the Feast of St. Patrick

St. Mel’s had a “Shamrockin” St. Patrick’s Day!! Ms. Lisa’s Kindergarten class had so much fun. The Kindergarteners designed and named their very own Leprechauns. There was Goldie McSprinkles, Shamrock McWiggles, Giggles McMagic, and more. The Kindergarteners made Leprechaun hats too! To make their St. Patrick’s Day extra fun, the Kindergarteners did some activities with Lucky Charm marshmallows and Fruit Loop cereal. The students graphed their marshmallows and created rainbows using their Fruit Loops. What fun! Happy St. Patrick’s Day from Ms. Lisa’s Kindergarten class!!

2nd Grade Animal Science Exploaration

St. Mel’s is working hard in science this week!! Mrs. Angerano’s 2nd graders have been working on their animal unit in science. The students worked on a research project this week. The students each chose one animal they wanted to learn more about. Then, the 2nd graders used their iPads to look up facts about the animal they chose. They used what they learned to create a poster, sharing more about the animal they chose. Look at the amazing posters they made!

2nd Graders Preparing for 1st Penance

Mrs. Angerano’s and Ms. Zimics’s 2nd graders went to church the other day to learn more about what they will experience during Penance. The students also got to take a “behind the scenes” tour to learn more about the items they see during church services. The 2nd graders were able to ask Father Fonti questions and grow in their knowledge of their faith. @stmelsrcchurch

Planting Seeds of Knowledge in Science Class

St. Mel’s students are planting seeds of knowledge in science class!! Ms. Cangemi’s 3rd graders are learning about life cycles in science. They’ve been learning about life cycles of all different organisms. Yesterday, the students planted pea seeds. They used soil, seeds, and science tools to plant their seeds. The 3rd graders will spend the next few weeks observing their seeds in the classroom. Let’s see whose plant grows the tallest! Keep watching those plants boys & girls!!

Celebrating Lunar New Year

Ms. Murphy’s 1st graders celebrated Lunar New Year. They read a story and watched videos of traditional dragon dances. They created their own dragon masks for their own dragon dances. The 1st graders tried some traditional Chinese foods that our story told us about. They tried Chinese cookies and vegetable dumplings with sauce…delicious! The students had a great time learning about a holiday that our friends celebrate. At St. Mel’s, it’s important that our students learn about different cultures and traditions. Keep sharing these experiences boys and girls!!

After School Tea and Craft Club

St. Mel’s has so many exciting new after school programs this year!! Ms. Murphy and Mrs. Turturro host a tea party with crafts after school once a week. The program is open to 1st through 5th grade girls. Last week’s craft time focused on button art! The girls were given a canvas and a wide variety of buttons. They were able to create any picture or design, using whatever buttons they wanted. Some girls did the first letter of their name, while others made a bouquet of flowers or a sunset. Look at these beautiful canvases! Keep making beautiful artwork girls!!

Read Across America Week

St. Mel’s celebrated Read Across America Week!! Our K-8 students spent a half hour every morning reading last week. The students had to stop what they were doing, grab a favorite book, and spend some quiet time reading. The students could read at their desk, find a comfortable chair, or sit on the floor. At St. Mel’s, we foster a love of reading within our school community.

After School Book Club

St. Mel’s has many after school programs this year!! Mrs. Angerano has a book club after school multiple days a week. She offers it to students in most grades above 2nd grade. The students read chapter books and work on related activities. Mrs. Angerano incorporates flexible seating and snacks into the program. It’s a great time and it helps grow a love for reading. Keep reading boys and girls!! #stmelsstrong

St. Mel's Hosts the Olympics

The “Olympics” have begun at St. Mel’s!! The Kindergarteners through 5th graders have officially started competing in the “Olympics.” Coach Q incorporated a popular 2026 Olympic sport. The students have been learning and participating in Curling! Looking at their faces, the students have been enjoying the sport. Keep practicing and one day one of you could be in the Olympics boys and girls!!

Valentine Celebrations

St. Mel’s students had a LOVELY time celebrating Valentines Day (a little early)!! There were celebrations that included sweet treats and heart-shaped cookie decorating. The students shared things they love about their life. They also shared love around school, handing out Valentines goodies to their friends. Happy Valentines Day from your St. Mel’s Wildcats!

100th Day of School Celebrations

St. Mel’s had a blast celebrating the 1️⃣0️⃣0️⃣th Day of School yesterday!! Something happened yesterday and A LOT of our children had aged! We had canes, suspenders, and gray wigs everywhere. We also had some super cool 100th day t-shirts. Our students participated in some fun activities to celebrate the 100th day. Some classes made 100th day posters, choosing 100 of their favorite things. Some classes shared what they would like to have 100 of. Some classes did 100 day centers, building and creating with different things. There were even some special 100th day snacks! 100 days flew by and we can’t wait to spend the rest of the year with our amazing children!

Celebrating the Feast of St. Mel

St. Mel’s had a special guest at first Friday mass today!! @stmelsrcchurch Our K-8 students attended mass today to celebrate the Feast of St. Mel. Not only did Father Fonti hold mass, but a dear friend of his joined us as well. Bishop Toups traveled all the way from Texas to join our students in celebrating St. Mel. We had the beautiful singing voices of our 4th through 8th grade students too. What an amazing way to celebrate the Feast of St. Mel with our students!!

St. Mel’s had a “slime-y” fun time yesterday!! Our UPK little ones and our K-8 students got to slime Mrs. Giacalone. There were smiles and laughs all around!!

Cool Field Trips

St. Mel’s had some AMAZING field trips last week!! To celebrate Catholic Schools Week, our 1st through 8th grade students went bowling. The students got to bowl, play arcade games, and even enjoyed a special lunch out. There was a lot of smiling, cheering, laughing, and even dancing. Our students at St. Mel’s deserve the best field trips!!

Buddy Day

St. Mel’s had a buddy day last week!! Our UPK little ones had some special visitors. Our 2nd through 5th graders stopped by the UPK rooms to participate in some activities with the little ones. They traced each others hands and drew what they wanted to be when they grow up. There were smiles, laughs, and some fun conversations all around. Thank you to our older students for making the UPK kiddos day by visiting!!
